When you focus in security administration on Web Application DLP (Data Lost Prevention) the chosen tools are critical. Nowadays, most common information loses occur through hidden channels, as metadata and hidden document information, can be. Because of this, it becomes necessary, to check all documents before sending them to a client.
MetaShield Protector is a solution that will allow avoiding this data loosing on office documents, when they are published on Web Sites. It achieves this task by cleaning the document on the fly, before it is sent to the client, this process makes the copy sent to the client completely free of undesired hide information or metadata. The MetaShield Protector is installed as an Intenet Information Services 7.0 for Windows Server 2008 module, and it is fully integrated with the web server architecture. This way, each time an office file is requested by a client, it is processed by MetaShield Protector, which cleans it on the fly, and delivers the clean copy to the client, even changing some values to a default ones, configured by the web server administrator.  MetaShield Protector is installed at Web Server level, and it can be enabled or disabled for each web site. This feature makes it easier to activate or deactivate the product in a particular Site, allowing administrator to do that in a couple of clicks: just right click the site and choose the option that appears in the context menu. Once the product has been installed and configured globally, it will be able to configure particular settings for each site in where it is installed. The first step in configuration settings is to provide a statistics repository, which will need a Microsoft SQL Server or a Microsoft SQL Server Express Database. This repository should be configured during the installation process but it can be changed later. As part of this particular settings previously mentioned, it will be able to choose which document formats will be going to be processed by MetaShield Protector on each Site. In this product version the supported files are: Microsoft Office binary documents (versions from Microsoft Office 97 to 2003, .doc, .xls, .pps, or .ppt), OOXML Documents (Microsoft Office 2007, .docx, .xlsx, .ppsx, or .pptx), PDF documents and OpenOffice documents (.sxw, .ods, .odp, .odt or .odg).
